This video was recorded in 1992, during the construction of a new-style home (referred to locally as a loufang). The workers are called taijiang; carrying is considered a specialized profession akin to carpenter (mujiang) or mason (shijiang). Especially in mountainous areas like Xiakou, mechanized lifting is impractical, so taijiang work together to lift extremely heavy objects--here a pre-cast reinforced concrete slab that is the standard unit of new home construction, in this case the roof at the top of a two-storey structure. The concrete slab weighed over 800 pounds. Taijiang also lift and carry large building stones cut out of the local red sandstone. This stone quarrying is the main form of sideline work in the village, and many local men are both masons and carriers. The chant keeps rhythm to the work; an essential coordinating element of this often dangerous profession. the song has no words; the singing is for rhythm (Hiyo! Heyo!...)
