This audio was recorded in 1992, in the ancestral hall (tangwu) of the home of Zhu Congde (78 years old in 1992), in Xiakou village. Zhu Congde sings “gifts to a loved one” (songqing ge), a local mountain song. The lyrics are sexually charged, and Zhu Congde was a little shy about singing them in mixed company. Like other shan’ge, the lyrics contain a list, which was counted off to keep the rhythm of work (see also Zhu Congde singing “orange flowers bloom” ganzi kaihua and “gifts to a loved one” songqing ge). The sound of men breaking stones with hammer and chisel can be heard in the background.
