This audio was recorded in 1992, in the ancestral hall (tangwu) of the home of Zhu Congde (78 years old in 1992), in Xiakou village. Zhu Congde sings “One egg, two yolks” (yige jidan liang huang), a local mountain song. The lyrics are flirtatious—typical of the shan’ge genre—telling of a resourceful and promiscuous woman. Like other shan’ge, the lyrics contain a list, which was counted off to keep the rhythm of work (see also Zhu Congde singing “orange flowers bloom” ganzi kaihua and “gifts to a loved one” songqing ge). The sound of men breaking stones with hammer and chisel can be heard in the background. One girl had eight sweethearts: The first lover was an official, the second was a cook The third was a baker, the fourth sold ginger The fifth sold fans, the sixth sold clothes The seventh was a monk, and the eighth a fortune teller. “ When I have a lawsuit, I have the official; “ For resolving disputes, I have the cook; “ When the baby cries, the baker bakes a cake; “ When my old man gets sick, I have ginger; “ When it’s hot, I have a fan; “ When it’s cold, I have clothes to wear: “ When I die in bed, I have the monk; “ When it’s time to be buried, I have the fortune teller. Those who find flowers have a beautiful talent!
