This audio was recorded in 1992, in the ancestral hall (tangwu) of the home of Zhu Congde (78 years old in 1992), in Xiakou village. Zhu Congde sings “orange flowers bloom” (ganzi kaihua), a local song of the shan’ge genre. Since work groups were often divided according to sex, many shan’ge are love songs, or at least, concern relations between the sexes. Often these songs seem unsentimental, as in the transaction described in these lyrics. The theme of premature death is also prevalent in local shan’ge (see also Zhu Congde singing “a spray of pink flowers.”) Note that the line “you can go to market three days in ten” refers to the periodic marketing system, where towns held markets in a spatial-temporal pattern maximizing the rational distribution of goods.
