Taiping nian
太平年
One of Liang Heqing's favorite songs is "Taiping nian" or "the year of great peace'. The song recounts the sad story of a woman whose husband falls ill and dies, listing the obligations she must carry out for him, from seeking medicine to bringing a doctor, then an exorcist, and then a series of funerary ritual experts, from tailors to fengshui geomancers. At the end, she fulfills her duty as a chaste widow, not remarrying for three years to honor her dead husband's memory. Liang is joined by two Tibetan women in Yaoji who sing along with him in the background. They explained that Liang had taught them the song when they were young girls, in keeping with his role of the "best singer" (i.e. the one who remembers the most songs) in the community.
