Zhu Congde and Wu Guangkui specifically remembered this song as dating from the period of “liberation” (the communist victory, 1950 locally). The lyrics contain the common tropes of premature death, of the divided landscape, of love and matchmaking, and of agriculture, but the overall tone is optimistic, perhaps reflecting the hope and energy of the early 1950s. This performance was recorded in 1992, in the ancestral hall (tangwu) of the home of Zhu Congde (78 years old in 1992), in Xiakou village. In another recording, he recites the lyrics, and at the end, he says, "that song's really nice!"
